01 Nov CHAMPIONSHIP TRIO ON JANUARY 13 FOR THE BETERBIEV VS SMITH
On January 13th, the Centre Vidéotron will come alive with the jingling of championship belts as Artur Beterbiev defends his WBC, WBO, IBF world titles against British contender Callum Smith. Christian Mbilli will put his WBA International and WBC Continental Americas belts on the line against Rohan Murdock. A third championship bout has now been added to the lineup of this event presented by Eye of the Tiger, as Jason Maloney will also defend his WBO bantamweight title against Saul Sanchez.
“I’m thrilled to add a third championship bout to this already historic card for Quebec boxing! The Maloney vs. Sanchez duel promises to be just as intense as the two main events due to the aggressive style of both boxers. We can confidently say that all the elements are in place to ensure a memorable spectacle on January 13th at the Centre Vidéotron. We invite sports enthusiasts from all over the province to come witness what will be our Super Bowl of boxing!” excitedly notes Camille Estephan, the president of EOTTM.
Jason Moloney (26-2, 19 KOs) gained valuable championship experience before securing the WBO bantamweight title. The Australian fighter, known as “Mayhem,” even faced the impressive Naoya Inoue for the IBF and WBA world titles, though he was defeated in the 7th round. However, he has since rebounded with victories, including capturing minor titles like WBC Silver and WBO International, and ultimately winning his world title in May 2023 by defeating Vincent Astrolabio.
“I’ve achieved my dream of becoming a world champion, but now I want to prove that I’m the best bantamweight in the world. I intend to stay very active in 2024, as I aim to eliminate all the other champions in my category and become the undisputed champion. First, I’ll make sure to win my fight on January 13th in a spectacular fashion, with an impressive knockout against Saul Sanchez. People of Quebec, get ready to meet Mayhem!” Moloney declares.
After losing a split decision to Eros Correa in June 2022, Saul Sanchez (20-2, 12 KOs) came back a year later to score a knockout against Venezuelan boxer Franklin Gonzalez in the sixth round. Sanchez followed this with another significant victory, a unanimous decision after 8 rounds against previously undefeated southpaw Filipino boxer RV Deniega. This win allowed him to climb to the 10th spot in the WBO world rankings, opening doors for his career:
“This is a golden opportunity, and I will make every sacrifice to ensure that I leave the Centre Vidéotron with the belt. I’ve recently secured two victories in a short time, and I’m already in the best shape of my career. I’ll be ready to deliver a war!” adds Sanchez.
Details about the preliminary fights that will complete this grand event will be revealed in the coming weeks. Ticket sales for the #BeterbievSmith gala on January 13, 2024, at the Centre Vidéotron are ongoing through the www.ticketmaster.ca network.
