From his first amateur bout at age 10 in 2009, Wyatt Sanford “just knew” boxing was the sport for him. The years that followed only confirmed it. From 2012 to 2015, the pride of Kennetcook, Nova Scotia, won four consecutive Canadian junior championships. In 2017, he became Canada’s No. 1 senior boxer—a position he held until turning professional in 2025. Sanford also made his mark, above all, on the international stage. In 2019, he competed at the World Amateur Championships in Russia, followed by his first Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. The following year, he won bronze at both the Continental Championships and the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. Continuing his climb through the international ranks, he earned silver at the Continental Championships in 2023, followed by gold at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. The pinnacle of his Olympic career came in 2024, when he won bronze in the 63.5 kg division at his second Olympic Games in Paris. The achievement was historic: it marked Canada’s first Olympic boxing medal in nearly 30 years, since 1996.
Became the first Canadian boxer in 28 years to win an Olympic medal, earning bronze at the Paris Games.
Won gold at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.
Competed in his first Olympic Games in Tokyo.
After that triumph—and having achieved all of his Olympic goals—Wyatt Sanford announced his move to the professional ranks in January 2025. The lightweight already brings an accomplished Olympic résumé, but his coach, Vincent Auclair, believes fans have not seen his full potential yet.
This impressive start to his professional career earned Wyatt Sanford a nomination among the prospects of the year by major American boxing outlet BoxingScene. His extensive amateur background has also allowed him to climb the ranks quickly. In 2025-2026, he had already progressed from four-round bouts to six-round bouts, and then to eight-round bouts. If this trend continues, it would therefore not be surprising to see“The Kennetcook Kid” become a serious world contender in the lightweight division (135 lb) as early as 2027-2028.
