Background & Amateur Career

Raised in a tough neighbourhood in Cali, Colombia, Jhon Orobio held on to his dream of building a better life for his family. Originally a soccer player, he discovered Muhammad Ali at age 10 and decided to pursue boxing. Blessed with natural talent and a fierce competitive mindset, Orobio quickly began competing as an amateur. After winning the vast majority of his bouts, he earned a place on Colombia’s junior national team. He competed at major events, including the Pan American Games and the Junior World Championships, where he won a bronze medal. It was during this period that EOTTM head trainer and recruitment director Marc Ramsay took notice. When Orobio entered the senior ranks at 18, his exceptional punching power allowed him to continue dominating with the same ease.
